BCHS to host "The Towanda of 1972," August 17

The Bradford County Historical Society will host a free program entitled "The Towanda of 1972" scheduled for Friday, August 17, 2012 at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Although the event is free to attend, participants are asked to register by calling 570-265-2240 or by email at

Towanda, the center of Bradford County, has changed considerably over the years. Step back in time 40 years to 1972 and revisit Towanda through rare film footage shot prior to the great flood. Get a glimpse of store facades including Newberry’s, W.T. Grant’s, and see the inside of the old Bradford County Historical Society museum located in the courthouse annex. Take a ride in a car as it enters Towanda from York Avenue. See faces of people you remember. This silent film footage will be narrated.

After the half hour film, slides of 1972 flood damage in and around Towanda will be shown. Some of the images were taken by Staley Clarke as he reported the damage for the Daily Review. The collection of images will also show the original James Street Bridge as it was damaged and subsequently collapsed as a result of the flood. The program will conclude with images showing the construction of the present bridge.

This program is part of the 2012 "Friday Night at the Museum" programming series that is held the third Friday of each month from May through October. Each event is held in the Great Room at the Bradford County Historical Society, located at 109 Pine Street, Towanda, PA. Free refreshments are provided at each program and the museum is open prior to the event.

Other Friday Night at the Museum programs scheduled for 2012 include: Minnequa: A Spring, A Hotel, A County, September 21; Towanda’s Silk Industry, October 19.
